1920s GAGE Ribbon & Gilt Cloche

Luscious gilt metallic and silk ribbon work adorn this beautiful 1920’s cloche.   Supple fine wool felt in a pretty ochre tan color, this deep cloche was made by famed millinery house of Gage (Chicago, New York and Paris) and was based on a Paris couture design.  The ribbon work is all expertly hand done and is lush and oh so pretty with scallops, frills, star flowers, and plump silk buds, all edged in gold metallic edges.  The brim is wired to keep its shape and is edged with silk and gilt ribbon also.  Fully lined with the Gage name stamped in gold, the lining is stunning and one of the prettiest I have seen.    Shimmering bright pink ombre’ satin changes color and shows a lime green shading as the light plays over the fibers.  SIZE….. The hat is a good size, inner circumference is 23 1/4″ so it sits low on the eyes and has a very early Flapper Art Deco appeal.    The hat is unusual in that these 1920’s hats are not usually made of fine wools, making this a rare and exceptional find for your collection.  Gage was one of the top hat makers and millinery design houses in the early to mid 20th century  and hats with their name are highly sought after.

CONDITION:  GOOD condition.  No rips or tears, and the wool is soft and supple, the ribbonwork is beautiful and very good, just a bit of wear in only a couple tiny places in the back.  The lining is very good, no splits, no dryness, no soiling or tears, but a bit of restitching is needed along the bottom area.  No missing trims.   The wool has a few very tiny moth nibbles (as slight depressions or nicks in the surface wool) but no moth holes…and has a bit of mild small spot/soiling in a few places but nothing terribly distracting and could be cleaned if desired but I leave that to the new owner to decide.  The hat crown is slightly rumpled from storage but this can be steamed right back to shape or worn as it is.  The hat does show a bit of age and has flaws mentioned, but is still a very scarce hat in overall good shape.  A large size and stunning French ribbon work add to its beauty and make it still a wearable and collectible chapeau.
