1950s EMME Hat

This wonderful hat is THE perfect example of this particular millinery style and is very scarce to find.   Designer label is EMME New York, and this was undoubtedly designed by the then young and relatively unknown milliner ADOLPHO.   Circa late 1950’s to very early 1960’s.  Inspired by the Edwardian Era hats of the early 20th century, the large and deep toque literally “floats” above the head, never touching the scalp except for the hidden prongs that clutch and hold the hat securely on.  Made of lush, finest quality Milan straw braid in a deep charcoal hue.  the crown is wrapped in a gathered band of French silk taffeta ribbon, in a classic Edwardian stripe and floral pattern, and the ribbon wraps under the brim for a very luxurious effect.   Inner wired prongs are velvet covered for comfort and style.    This is NOT a pillbox, the hat has a deep, wide crown and extends beyond the face and head.  This “floating toque” style was popular for a very short time, and worn with the “sack” or saque dresses and sheaths, and stiletto heals, to create a classic French couture silhouette on the woman wearing it.  A  very hard to find style that is perfect for your vintage attire.
