John-Frederics Winged “New Look” Hat w Huge Rose
SOLD!
Simply Fabulous! Vintage 1948 “New Look” Era hat. Label is JOHN-FREDERICS, New York. So hard to find hats that exemplify this tiny window of fashion that existed from 1947 to the very early 1950’s. This hat undoubtedly took its inspiration from Christian Dior, as it is an almost exact copy of one of the hats from Dior’s 1948 Paris Haute Couture collection which took the fashion world by storm following WW II.
The chapeau reminds us of a “French Nun’s” head wear, with its sort of winged appeal, but is definitely chic and sexy. Made of an unusual type of rigid strawcloth that was expertly hand molded and folded to create a striking fashion silhouette. The small shallow crown is wrapped in black velvet ribbon that creates 4 graduating tails down the side, and looks very dramatic. Edged in black velvet piping all round the brim edge too. To secure it on the head, there is a “Juliet cap” or bandeau underneath the hat that is also edged in black velvet piping. On the left side is a HUGE pale pink silky rose with green wired leaves and 2 green stems. The rose is actually a pin and can be removed if you wish a more clean classic look or if you want the hat to to match another color outfit, but I believe it is original to the hat. The brim is folded up in the back, and the hat can be worn several ways and at different angles. If you want a hat that truly screams NEW LOOK ERA, than look no further! Scarce style, Couture milliner label and beautifully made.
