Balenciaga Vintage Hat, 1950’s Black Silk
Vintage BALENCIAGA Hat….A once in a lifetime find…….Classic Toque made of the finest Black Silk crepe, fabulous structure and styling….
Genuine Balenciaga chapeau, with his Spanish Couture label, EISA. All the fashion world has their eye on the vintage Haute Couture designs of Cristobal Balenciaga now, with a show of some of his best work currently on view at the deYoung museum in San Francisco. This beautiful hat is purity and elegance, a sculptural high pillbox toque of finest Swiss silk crepe that is almost tissue like in its weave…so fine… wrapped with a band of crepe and a wide soft bow front and center. Expertly hand crafted, lined in black silk. There is a place where the lining has loosened, and I peeked under and was so happily surprised! Amazingly, the under base is a hand blocked willow material (impossible to find this anymore), which is a millinery material that has not been made since the 1920’s, so he must have had some old stock or had this especially made for his Couture hat line.
NOTE: We had to lighten the photos to show the detail, as black is difficult to photograph…the hat is not faded and has no lightened areas…that is the camera flash bounding off the silk fibers…. the hat is evenly colored, dark black….
Purchased from a major museum’s costume collection, and well stored ever since.
Simple, Structured, sculptural, purity of design…This hat is Balenciaga defined…..
If you attend the museum show, or any of the other scheduled Balenciaga events around the world this Spring, it is a MUST to wear a genuine Balenciaga cocktail hat or other hat. Be the star of the evening in this rare couture chapeau. Even Hamish Bowles might be jealous!
CONDITION: VERY GOOD to near excellent. Well stored and well cared for. Purchased from a major museum and I have cared for it well. No tears, no fading, hat is not out of shape. Silk crepe is excellent with no flaws. There is a tiny bit of make up on the inside brim and grosgrain ribbon, that is so minor but you know me, I mention everything. I am sure this can be easily cleaned if it bothers you, and is not seen from the outside. As mentioned, the lining is loose in 1 area, but this is not a real detraction. Clean and fresh looking, with no soiling or odors. Probably worn only once, by the original owner. Overall near excellent and A very rare find for the vintage fashion and hat collector.
