I. Magnin 1940s Lamb & Marcasite Tassel Toque Hat
Exotic and glamorous, vintage 1940 hat, inspired by a Russian Empress or Cossack chapeau. Made of luxurious black Persian lamb that is lustrous and glossy, with dense tight curls. Trimmed on the side with a lambskin suede button from which dangle two lush, looped tassels of glittering silver marcasites. The top of the hat is buttery soft lambskin suede that is thin and supple.
The hat is an interesting envelope style that folds completely flat, making it perfect for traveling or packing in your purse or suitcase. Fully lined in black satin and bears the custom millinery label from I. Magnin. I. Magnin, New York, had one of the world’s best couture millinery salons which catered to the rich and famous. The hat can be worn several ways, with the “points” worn side to side, or tilted with the points more front-to-back. I show it both ways.
Dates from the exact year 1940 and was worn for a holiday trip to visit family in war torn London, according to the original owner. This hat could probably tell some great stories!
Condition is very good. Clean, fresh looking, with no dryness, no soiling or wear, lining is very good, and the hat has a clean interior. The lamb is glossy and beautiful, not dry or worn, skin is supple. Tassels are excellent, glittery and intact.
