1940s Caspar Davis Huge Beret Hat w Soutache Trim
Perfect for the Autumn holiday season and beyond! A very special and unique, huge oversized beret by famous Hollywood milliner Caspar-Davis. Supple and soft pure wool felt is expertly hand sewn and sculpted, and embellished with stunning and lustrous silk soutache embroidery. The color is what I would call “Bittersweet”, leaning to a wonderful nutmet or cinnamon shade. The left side of the hat’s underside (seen in the photos) has a triple row of sewn “tucks” or gathers and felt bow for added style.
There is an elastic to secure to the head at the proper extreme TILT angle, and the hat can be worn in a variety of ways. We like it worn as shown, but it looks great on the back of the head too! These over sized beret shapes were very popular during the early years of WWII, and this hat dates to circa 1940-1944. The Swing Era!
Label reads CASPAR-DAVIS, California Model. This is a top name in 1940’s millinery and hat collectors should be proud to have this in their collection, as I have been these many years. Hat maker to the stars of film and stage, the label denotes quality and unique style.
I think this is one of the prettiest of these large berets I have seen, and the hat is in very good condition, fresh and clean with no soiling or holes, no color fade, and no moth damage. Soutache embroidery is excellent. Inside of hat is clean. Elastic to secure to the head at the proper TILT angle has lost its stretch but is intact and secure. The hat may show very mild signs of previous use but I found no flaws to note.
