1920s Silk & Velvet Cloche Toque w Florals & Gilt

Pretty pastel colors and a classic toque shape make this antique hat so lovely! Dates from the period of the late ‘Teens to the early 1920s. Beautifully embellished with all hand sewn trimmings of soft pink and celery green silk trapunto flowers that are lightly stuffed with cotton batting for a puffy look. Winding around the entire hat is French, gold gilt metallic thread for a rich touch. The hat is sturdy with good structure and is made of a dense and fine black silk velvet, with a tip (top) and bottom of a rich textured brocade fabric, with a decorative sort of fold over on the one side. The brim or sideband is higher in front and slopes gently to the back. Fully lined in black taffeta type fabric.
The inner circumference is 22″. The hat has a cloche appeal, but does not sit low over the forehead on a size 22 head unless you pull it tight. There appears to be room to make this a bit larger where the inside fold is (see photos). It may have been intended to sit more up on the head like a WWI era toque, or if you want to wear this, and have a slightly smaller head you can wear this as a flapper cloche.
Condition is good, with some signs of age and light wear. Mild fading of the black brocade in a few places, and the silk flowers are very nice but a few have some wear. Please take a look at the photos. Lining is very nice, intact and well sewn, some minor age but nothing serious. The hat looks bit tired upon really close inspection, but I think it is quite good, and still makes a lovely presentation and although it has some wear it is still quite charming.
